Political Confrontation Escalates After Violent Attack on TMC MP Abhishek Banerjee in Sonarpur

BHARAT / Kolkata, West Bengal: A violent attack on Trinamool Congress (TMC) national general secretary and Member of Parliament Abhishek Banerjee in Sonarpur has triggered a major political confrontation in West Bengal, with the ruling TMC and the opposition Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) trading sharp accusations over the incident.

The attack occurred on Saturday when Banerjee, the MP from Diamond Harbour, traveled to Sonarpur in South 24 Parganas district to meet the family of a local TMC worker who was allegedly killed in recent post-poll violence. What was intended as a condolence visit soon turned into a dramatic confrontation that has intensified the already bitter political atmosphere in the state.

Convoy Attacked Amid Protests

According to police officials and eyewitnesses, Banerjee’s convoy was intercepted by a large group of protesters shortly after entering Sonarpur town. The crowd allegedly surrounded the MP’s vehicle, shouting slogans and hurling stones, eggs, and other objects at the convoy.

Witnesses reported scenes of chaos as security personnel struggled to control the crowd. Several individuals reportedly broke through the initial security cordon and attempted to physically assault the TMC leader. Visuals circulating on social media showed Banerjee wearing a cricket helmet while being escorted away from the scene by security personnel, highlighting the seriousness of the threat.

The MP was subsequently evacuated and taken to a private hospital in Kolkata for medical evaluation. Doctors conducted preliminary examinations and provided treatment for minor injuries before discharging him later in the day.

Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, along with senior TMC leaders including Firhad Hakim and Derek O’Brien, visited the hospital shortly after the incident. The visit underscored the importance of Banerjee within the party and reflected the concern among TMC leaders regarding the attack.

TMC Calls It a Planned Assault

The Trinamool Congress has strongly condemned the incident, describing it as a deliberate and organized attack aimed at harming one of its most prominent leaders.

Speaking after the incident, Abhishek Banerjee alleged that political opponents had attempted to kill him under the cover of a public protest. The TMC leadership characterized the violence as a premeditated conspiracy rather than a spontaneous expression of public anger.

Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee also reacted sharply, accusing the BJP of fostering a climate of political violence. In a strongly worded message on social media, she alleged that the opposition was responsible for creating conditions that led to the attack.

To support its allegations, the TMC released photographs and videos purportedly taken during the confrontation. Party leaders identified one individual as local BJP functionary Abhijit Biswas, claiming he was actively involved in directing members of the crowd.

The party also named another individual, Akash Gayan, alleging that he participated directly in the physical assault. TMC representatives cited his social media activity as evidence of his political affiliation with the BJP.

According to TMC leaders, the released visuals demonstrate that the attack was not an unplanned protest but rather a coordinated effort involving opposition activists. The party has demanded strict legal action against those responsible and called for a comprehensive investigation into the incident.

BJP Rejects Allegations

The BJP has categorically denied any involvement in the attack and accused the TMC of attempting to politicize the incident for electoral gain.

Senior BJP leaders dismissed the allegations as baseless and argued that the violence was more likely the result of internal factional disputes within the ruling party. They contended that local rivalries and conflicts among TMC supporters may have contributed to the unrest witnessed in Sonarpur.

BJP IT Cell chief Amit Malviya challenged the TMC’s narrative by claiming that some of the individuals identified in connection with the incident had previously been associated with former TMC MLA Lovely Maitra. According to Malviya, this connection raises questions about the ruling party’s claims and suggests that the violence may have originated from internal political tensions.

At the same time, BJP leaders maintained that the confrontation reflected widespread public dissatisfaction with the state government. While condemning the use of violence, they argued that years of political conflict and allegations of intimidation had generated significant resentment among sections of the local population.

West Bengal BJP president Samik Bhattacharya stated that violence has no place in a democratic society. However, he suggested that the incident could be viewed as a manifestation of accumulated public anger against the ruling establishment.

Police Begin Investigation

Law enforcement agencies moved quickly following the attack, launching a large-scale investigation to identify those involved.

Senior police officials confirmed that teams conducted overnight raids across parts of South 24 Parganas district. Investigators have been reviewing CCTV footage, mobile phone recordings, and other digital evidence collected from the area.

By Sunday, police announced the arrest of at least five individuals allegedly connected to the assault. Authorities stated that the suspects would be produced before a court in Baruipur as part of the ongoing legal process.

Interestingly, police initiated the case on their own after no formal complaint had been filed immediately by either Banerjee or the TMC leadership. Officials said the seriousness of the incident warranted swift action to ensure accountability and prevent further escalation.

Investigators have indicated that additional arrests may follow as more evidence is analyzed. Authorities are also examining social media content and communication records to determine whether the attack was organized in advance.
