    KHEL JAGAT / When Royal Challengers Bengaluru completed a historic back-to-back title triumph by winning the IPL 2026 crown, much of the attention naturally gravitated toward Virat Kohli, Rajat Patidar, and the franchise’s dominant campaign. Yet, hidden behind the celebrations was one of the most remarkable individual stories of the season — the resurgence of veteran fast bowler Bhuvneshwar Kumar.

    At an age when most fast bowlers are either managing limited workloads or preparing for retirement, Bhuvneshwar emerged as the most successful Indian bowler of IPL 2026, claiming 28 wickets and playing a crucial role in RCB’s title-winning campaign. His journey back to the top is not a tale of sudden inspiration or miraculous recovery. Instead, it is a story built on relentless discipline, meticulous planning, and an unwavering love for the game.

    For many fans, Bhuvneshwar’s connection with Royal Challengers Bengaluru appeared to begin at the IPL auction when the franchise secured his services. However, his association with the Bengaluru-based side stretches much further back. In 2009, long before he became one of India’s premier swing bowlers, Bhuvneshwar made a solitary appearance in an RCB jersey during the Champions League T20. It was also his first-ever T20 match.

    Seventeen years later, he found himself once again wearing the same colors, but this time as a senior statesman and one of the key architects of a championship-winning side. Of all the players who featured in that 2009 match, only Virat Kohli and Manish Pandey remain active in the IPL alongside him today.

    Such longevity is rare, especially for a fast bowler.

    Throughout his career, Bhuvneshwar battled several significant injuries. Back problems, ankle issues, and knee concerns repeatedly interrupted his progress. By 2023, his international career had virtually come to a standstill. Younger fast bowlers were breaking into the Indian setup, and questions were being raised about whether Bhuvneshwar’s best years had already passed.

    His pace had dipped, his workload was being carefully managed, and recurring injuries threatened to end his career prematurely. Many players in similar circumstances choose to gradually wind down their ambitions.

    Bhuvneshwar chose a different path.

    Three years ago, he began a complete physical transformation under the guidance of his personal trainer, Surya Yadav. The objective was simple but demanding: reduce body fat, increase strength, and build a body capable of handling the demands of modern T20 cricket.

    At the time, Bhuvneshwar’s body fat percentage was close to 20 percent. Today, it stands between 13 and 14 percent. More importantly, he achieved this reduction without sacrificing muscle mass or strength. His weight has remained relatively stable at around 73 to 74 kilograms, but his body composition has changed dramatically.

    The results became visible throughout IPL 2026.

    Bhuvneshwar consistently touched speeds approaching 140 kmph, something few expected from a bowler in his mid-thirties with a history of injuries. During the final against Gujarat Titans, he dismissed Sai Sudharsan with a sharp bouncer that climbed unexpectedly and nearly touched 139 kmph. Earlier in the tournament, he had similarly troubled Shubman Gill with pace and movement.

    The increased speed was not accidental.

    According to his training team, one of the biggest concerns in previous seasons had been the decline in his run-up speed. Injuries had forced his body to make subtle adjustments to his bowling action. To protect his back, his natural mechanics changed, reducing the effectiveness of one of his greatest weapons — backspin.

    Backspin has always been central to Bhuvneshwar’s success. It helps create late movement and allows the ball to behave unpredictably after pitching. However, generating quality backspin requires power, stability, and a strong lower body.

    Recognizing this, his trainers spent months rebuilding his movement patterns. The program included strength training, plyometric exercises, explosive jumping drills, throwing routines, and power development sessions. The goal was not merely to recover from injuries but to become stronger than before.

    The transformation extended beyond pace.

    One of the most fascinating aspects of Bhuvneshwar’s bowling this season was his mastery of the wobble-seam delivery. Traditionally known for his conventional swing bowling, he expanded his skill set by incorporating a modern variation that has become increasingly important in world cricket.

    The wobble seam creates uncertainty for batters because it can move either way after pitching. By adding this weapon to his arsenal, Bhuvneshwar evolved from being a traditional swing bowler into a more versatile and unpredictable T20 operator.

    His willingness to keep learning, even after more than a decade at the highest level, has been one of the defining features of his career.

    Another major turning point came when he embraced heavy strength training.

    Initially, Bhuvneshwar was hesitant about lifting significant weights. Like many fast bowlers, he worried that heavy lifting could increase injury risks. His trainer, however, insisted that progressive overload was essential if he wanted to build strength and durability.

    The change has been dramatic.

    A few years ago, Bhuvneshwar’s squat routine involved approximately 40 kilograms. Today, he comfortably performs squats with more than 110 kilograms. His Olympic lifting exercises have also improved significantly, helping him generate greater power and athleticism.

    The benefits have been evident not only in his bowling but also in his durability. Since 2022, he has completed full IPL seasons without suffering major injury setbacks. For a bowler whose career was once repeatedly interrupted by physical problems, that achievement is perhaps as significant as any statistical milestone.

    His commitment extends far beyond match days.

    According to those who work closely with him, Bhuvneshwar spends between five and seven hours every day focusing on different aspects of cricket and fitness. He works on bowling, batting, fielding, rehabilitation, recovery, and conditioning with equal dedication.

    Few people realize that he also spends over an hour each day practicing his batting. That dedication paid off during IPL 2026 when he struck a memorable first-ball six against Mumbai Indians in a crucial encounter.

    Nutrition forms another important pillar of his routine. A high-protein diet, disciplined eating habits, and careful attention to recovery have become integral parts of his preparation.

    Yet perhaps the most revealing insight into his character came during the Uttar Pradesh T20 League. Despite suffering from a viral illness severe enough to require intravenous fluids, Bhuvneshwar remained determined to play the following day.

    When questioned about why he was pushing himself so hard, his response was simple.

    “I love cricket. I love bowling. That’s why I play.”

    That statement perfectly captures the essence of his comeback.

    Fifteen years after taking his first IPL wicket, Bhuvneshwar Kumar remains one of the league’s premier fast bowlers. His contributions helped RCB secure a second consecutive title and have reignited conversations about a possible return to India’s white-ball setup.

    Whether another international opportunity arrives or not, his achievement is already complete. He has demonstrated that longevity is not about luck or motivation. It is about discipline, consistency, and the willingness to keep improving. In an era obsessed with instant success, Bhuvneshwar Kumar’s IPL 2026 campaign stands as a reminder that greatness is often built quietly, one training session at a time.
