Indian all-rounder Vijay Shankar has announced his retirement from domestic cricket and the Indian Premier League, bringing an end to a professional career that spanned more than a decade across Indian domestic cricket, the IPL, and the national team.

In an emotional statement shared on Instagram, Vijay confirmed his decision while reflecting on the memories and lessons the sport gave him throughout his journey.

“I have decided to retire from playing domestic cricket and IPL to pursue new opportunities and play more cricket,” Vijay wrote.

A Long Journey with Tamil Nadu

Vijay’s cricketing story was deeply tied to Tamil Nadu cricket team. Having represented the state from the Under-13 level onward, he made his senior debut in 2012 and went on to serve Tamil Nadu cricket for 13 years before switching to Tripura cricket team for the 2025-26 season.

Over the course of his domestic career, Vijay established himself as a dependable batting all-rounder capable of contributing in every format.

His career numbers underline that consistency:

  • First-Class Cricket: 77 matches, 4253 runs, 43 wickets
  • List A Cricket: 112 matches, 2790 runs, 73 wickets
  • T20 Cricket: 159 matches, 2583 runs, 38 wickets

While he was never the loudest superstar in Indian cricket, Vijay became known for adaptability, calmness under pressure, and his ability to balance batting with medium-pace bowling.

IPL Career Across Multiple Franchises

Vijay Shankar’s IPL journey began with Chennai Super Kings in 2013. Opportunities initially came slowly, but his breakthrough arrived during his stint with Sunrisers Hyderabad and later Delhi Capitals.

His 2018 season with Delhi Capitals proved especially important, where he scored valuable middle-order runs and showcased his all-round ability. He then returned to Sunrisers Hyderabad and became a regular feature in their setup between 2019 and 2021. Vijay later joined Gujarat Titans during their title-winning 2022 campaign. Although he played a limited role that season, he enjoyed a strong comeback year in 2023, scoring 301 runs at an impressive strike rate above 160.

That form earned him a return to Chennai Super Kings in 2025 — a symbolic homecoming to the franchise where his IPL career had started. However, an underwhelming campaign meant he went unsold in the following auction.

India Career and the 2019 World Cup

Vijay represented India national cricket team in 12 ODIs and 9 T20Is between 2018 and 2019.

His biggest moment came when he was selected for India’s squad at the 2019 Cricket World Cup. At the time, India were searching intensely for a reliable No.4 batter, and Vijay’s ability to contribute with both bat and ball made him an attractive option, especially in English conditions.

Although his World Cup campaign was interrupted by injury, one unforgettable memory remains part of Indian cricket folklore.

Against Pakistan national cricket team, Vijay was unexpectedly brought into the attack midway through an over after an injury to Bhuvneshwar Kumar. On his very first ball in a World Cup, he dismissed Imam-ul-Haq — a dream moment for any cricketer. Another highlight he fondly remembered was defending 11 runs in the final over against Australia national cricket team during India’s 500th ODI victory in Nagpur.

Reflecting on his India journey, Vijay wrote:

“Representing the country will be my highest badge of honour. Bowling the last over at India’s 500th ODI at Nagpur and my first ball first wicket at the 2019 World Cup are moments I will hold onto forever.”

A Message About Online Negativity

Perhaps the most striking part of Vijay’s farewell message was his candid acknowledgment of the criticism and online abuse he faced during his career.

Over the years, Vijay often became the target of trolling, especially during India’s search for a permanent middle-order batter around the 2019 World Cup period. Despite the criticism, he chose resilience over confrontation.

“I have faced unreal hate and negativity. Let me take this opportunity to let you know that I chose to ignore and move forward. If I can do that, anyone can! Think positive and work hard. Cricket has taught me life. Cricket is my life.”

Those words offered a deeply personal glimpse into the mental challenges professional athletes frequently endure beyond the field.

More Than Just Statistics

Vijay Shankar’s career may not be remembered through record-breaking numbers alone, but it reflects the journey of a cricketer who consistently adapted to every role asked of him.

He was a dependable domestic performer, a useful IPL utility player, and an India international who lived the dream of representing his country at a World Cup. From Tamil Nadu’s cricket system to the international stage, Vijay’s career stands as a reminder that Indian cricket is built not only on superstars, but also on hardworking professionals who contribute quietly across formats and teams.

As he steps away from domestic cricket and the IPL, Vijay Shankar leaves behind memories of resilience, versatility, and perseverance — qualities that defined his cricketing life.
