But the home side did not ©IPLThe atmosphere at Chepauk before Chennai Super Kings took on Sunrisers Hyderabad felt less like a league game and more like a grand farewell celebration waiting to happen. The expectation across the stadium was unmistakable. Fans arrived hours early hoping to witness one more iconic moment from MS Dhoni, whose absence throughout IPL 2026 due to injury has left a visible emotional void in Chennai’s campaign.The anticipation only intensified as rumours spread around the city. Reports suggested several former CSK legends would be present at the ground, while local media even speculated that the newly elected Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu might attend the fixture. The possibility of Dhoni returning for CSK’s final home game of the season turned Chepauk into an emotional cauldron well before the toss.Then came the biggest sign of all.For the first time this season, Dhoni arrived at the stadium on a match day nearly 90 minutes before the start. Given his injury troubles and limited public appearances around the team, that single sighting sent the crowd into frenzy. Every movement around the CSK dugout was watched closely. Every camera remained fixed on the dressing room balcony. The hope was obvious — one final appearance, one more trademark helicopter shot, perhaps even one last victory lap at Chepauk.But it never happened.When the playing XI walked out without Dhoni, the mood inside the stadium changed instantly. What began as a night of expectation slowly turned into one of disappointment and frustration, especially as the game unfolded into what could become the defining loss of CSK’s season.Ironically, on a night when all attention was focused on one wicketkeeper, three others stepped forward to lift the crowd. Sanju Samson provided the early spark with an aggressive cameo that immediately energized the stadium. Urvil Patel followed with fearless strokeplay, including two towering sixes off Pat Cummins that brought the Chepauk crowd alive. Youngster Kartik Sharma also impressed with his positive intent, ensuring CSK maintained momentum through the first half of the innings.However, all three departed before the innings reached its final phase, and once again Chennai’s recurring problem resurfaced — the struggles of captain Ruturaj Gaikwad at the top of the order.Gaikwad’s innings of 15 from 21 deliveries summed up much of his difficult season. In a tournament where aggressive Powerplay batting has become essential, CSK’s skipper has consistently struggled to maintain tempo. Among all IPL openers who have faced at least 100 deliveries this season, Gaikwad owns the lowest strike rate. On a surface where scoring was difficult, there was some justification for caution, but his inability to rotate strike or punish loose deliveries placed additional pressure on the middle order.And yet, despite those struggles, CSK still managed to post what looked like a strong total of 180. On the slow and two-paced Chepauk wicket, it appeared more than competitive. The reason was clear — SRH’s seamers quickly recognised how to exploit the conditions.Cummins, Eshan Malinga and Sakib Hussain repeatedly used cutters and slower balls into the surface, forcing CSK batters into mistimed shots throughout the innings. The ball frequently stopped on the pitch, making clean hitting extremely difficult.Even SRH assistant coach James Franklin admitted after the game that the visitors themselves were surprised by the nature of the wicket. Chepauk in recent seasons has generally produced better batting tracks, but this surface resembled the slower Chennai pitches of previous eras.The key difference, however, was adaptability.SRH adjusted almost immediately. CSK did not.That tactical contrast ultimately decided the contest.Despite bowling on the same pitch during the chase, Chennai’s seamers failed to consistently use slower deliveries. SRH’s pacers bowled 39 slower balls during CSK’s innings, while Chennai’s quicks managed only 12 in reply. Instead of forcing Ishan Kishan and Heinrich Klaasen to generate pace on their own, CSK repeatedly offered pace-on deliveries that became easier to hit once the batters settled.There were also tactical decisions that raised questions afterward. Akeal Hosein looked threatening on the slow surface and created pressure during his spell. Yet, despite conditions favouring spin and variation, he was surprisingly taken out of the attack before completing his quota. As Kishan and Klaasen rebuilt the chase, the absence of Hosein became increasingly noticeable.That lingering “what if” will probably haunt CSK supporters the most.Head coach Stephen Fleming admitted after the match that Chennai believed 181 would be enough. Fleming also suggested there may have been slightly more dew in the second innings, making batting somewhat easier. But he acknowledged that SRH adapted better to the changing conditions.The defeat leaves CSK hanging precariously in the playoff race with little room for recovery. What makes the loss particularly painful is the context surrounding their season. Injuries have disrupted the squad repeatedly. Dhoni has not played a single match. Several players have been forced in and out of the XI. Yet despite all those setbacks, a playoff spot still remained within reach entering this contest.That opportunity is now slipping away. ye padeGaikwad had offered fans one final piece of hope at the toss when he hinted that Dhoni could potentially return for the final league game in Ahmedabad if CSK remained alive in the competition. Instead, the loss against SRH has left their campaign dependent on complicated permutations and outside results.For Hyderabad, the night became one of celebration and qualification. For Chennai, it became another chapter of frustration in a season filled with missed opportunities.And perhaps that is what made the ending feel especially cruel.The evening began with noise, nostalgia, and the possibility of one more magical Dhoni moment at Chepauk. It ended with silence, disappointment, and the growing realization that CSK’s IPL 2026 campaign may have slipped away without their greatest icon ever stepping onto the field."},{"@context":"https://schema.org/","@type":"BreadcrumbList
@type":"ListItem
