BHARAT NEWS / M.P /The Central Bureau of Investigation on Thursday arrested Giribala Singh, the mother-in-law of 33-year-old model and actor Twisha Sharma, whose death in Bhopal has triggered a high-profile investigation involving allegations of dowry harassment, evidence tampering and forced abortion.

The arrest came just hours after the Madhya Pradesh High Court cancelled the anticipatory bail earlier granted to Giribala Singh in the case.

Twisha Sharma was found dead at her in-laws’ residence in Bhopal on May 12. Since then, the case has drawn significant public attention due to the serious allegations made by her family and the involvement of a former judicial officer.

CBI Team Reaches Residence

According to sources, a three-member CBI team arrived at Giribala Singh’s residence around 10:30 am on Thursday as part of the ongoing investigation. Officials questioned her for several hours and also reportedly carried out digital mapping of the house to reconstruct the sequence of events connected to Twisha Sharma’s death.

The agency has intensified its probe since formally taking over the investigation earlier this week from the Madhya Pradesh Police. Sources said the CBI is now planning to establish a temporary camp office in Bhopal to handle the growing investigation. The agency has reportedly written to the city police commissioner seeking office space and a secure facility to preserve evidence and case documents.

High Court Quashes Anticipatory Bail

Earlier in the day, the Madhya Pradesh High Court cancelled the anticipatory bail previously granted to Giribala Singh by a sessions court on May 15.

Justice Devnarayan Mishra, in a detailed 17-page order, observed that the allegations and factual circumstances of the case required closer scrutiny.

The court stated that the anticipatory bail order granted earlier was being quashed in view of the seriousness of the accusations against the accused.

Appearing for the CBI, Tushar Mehta argued that the circumstances under which anticipatory bail had been granted raised doubts about whether all relevant aspects had been properly considered by the lower court.

Following the High Court’s decision, lawyer Anurag Shrivastava, representing Twisha Sharma’s family, said the cancellation of bail was an important step toward justice.

Allegations of Evidence Tampering

The CBI has accused Giribala Singh of attempting to influence public opinion and tamper with evidence after securing anticipatory bail earlier this month.

According to submissions made before the High Court, Singh allegedly held a press conference on May 18 during which she made claims against the deceased that investigators believe were intended to damage Twisha Sharma’s reputation.

The agency further alleged that Singh used her influence and position to interfere with the crime scene.

Investigators told the court that although police had seized CCTV footage from the residence during the initial probe on May 13, Singh allegedly retained portions of the footage and later circulated selected clips on social media.

The CBI argued that selective release of video material may have been intended to manipulate public perception and interfere with the investigation.

Serious Allegations Raised by CBI

The agency has also made several disturbing allegations connected to Twisha Sharma’s personal life and treatment within her marital home.

According to the CBI, recovered WhatsApp chats suggest that Giribala Singh and her son Samarth Singh allegedly questioned Twisha Sharma’s character after she became pregnant. Investigators claimed the victim was pressured into terminating the pregnancy after allegations were raised regarding the child’s parentage.

The CBI further told the court that injuries were found on Twisha Sharma’s wrists and elbows, but her in-laws had failed to provide any satisfactory explanation regarding how those injuries occurred.

The agency argued that custodial interrogation of Giribala Singh was necessary because of the seriousness of the allegations and the possibility of evidence manipulation.

During court proceedings, the CBI reportedly stated that the accused had “left no stone unturned” in attempting to malign Twisha Sharma’s character.

Husband Already in CBI Custody

Earlier this week, a court in Bhopal sent Twisha Sharma’s husband, Samarth Singh, to CBI custody.

Investigators later took him to the family residence in the Katara Hills area as part of further questioning and evidence reconstruction.

The CBI officially took over the case on Monday and re-registered the FIR originally filed by Madhya Pradesh Police.

Both Samarth Singh and Giribala Singh have been named as accused in the case.

Case Sparks Public Attention

The death of Twisha Sharma has generated widespread attention on social media and among women’s rights groups due to allegations of dowry harassment and mental abuse.

Her final messages to friends reportedly suggested that she felt trapped and emotionally distressed in her marriage.

The case has also reignited discussions around domestic violence, dowry-related harassment and the treatment of women within abusive marital environments in India.

Legal experts say the High Court’s intervention and the transfer of the investigation to the CBI indicate the seriousness with which authorities are now treating the case.

The investigation remains ongoing, and the agency is expected to continue questioning family members, analysing digital evidence and examining forensic material collected from the residence.

No final conclusions regarding the cause of death have yet been officially announced.
